Much of Port St. Lucie was platted by General Development Corporation from the 1950s onward as single-family lots, and many of the older homes were built on septic tanks. The city’s Utility Systems Department has been converting them: it reports more than 11,000 homes connected since 1999, about 350 a year, using a small tank with a grinder pump. New construction has to connect to city sewer; the city’s program page does not require an existing home to connect.
Where your street is in a special assessment district, the city lists the connection cost at $9,445, or $77.79 a month for 120 months with no interest (effective 1 October 2026). If that assessment is on your parcel, it shows up in title work and is paid or carried at closing. We price a septic home either way, so you don’t need to connect before selling.
