Deltona began in 1962, when the Mackle brothers bought 17,203 acres and filed a plan for 35,143 lots; the first residents arrived in April 1963. It became a city on 31 December 1995 and is now Volusia County’s largest municipality. In 2003 the city bought the water and wastewater system from Florida Water Services, so Deltona Water, part of the city’s Public Works Department, sends the final utility bill.
Permits come from the city’s Building Services Division and code cases from its Code Compliance Division. Lake Monroe lies just south of the city: after Hurricane Ian, the St. Johns River gauge near Sanford, at the lake, set a record crest of 8.96 feet on 9 October 2022, almost a foot above major flood stage. Check the FEMA map for lakeside addresses.
